EMBELLISHED SWEATSHIRT DIY

I’m always looking for fun ways to personalize my daughter’s clothes and there’s nothing easier than a quick DIY embellishing project. I bought this plain, gray sweatshirt from American Apparel a couple of months ago and have been saving it for a project. As I mentioned in my last post, I recently released my first craft product – diecut felt words that are suitable for sewing or glueing on to all kinds of sewing and crafting projects. I’ll be sharing my ideas for using them in different ways right here on my blog, so stay tuned.

For this sweatshirt I decided to glue the felt to the front of the sweatshirt. As much as I love sewing, it’s nice to take a shortcut every now and then. Plus, this makes it a perfect project for people who don’t sew or don’t own a sewing machine. If you’d like to do something similar, it’s important you chose the correct glue to adhere the felt to the sweatshirt. Using the right adhesive will allow you to wash the sweatshirt safe in the knowledge that the felt is permanently attached to the sweatshirt.
This Fabric Fusion by Aleene’s Adhesives is the perfect glue for this project. It dries clear, cleans up easily, is non toxic and machine washable. You simply apply a thin layer of glue to the back of the die cut felt – I used a small brush – and press the felt to the sweatshirt with a light pressure.
I let my daughter wear the sweatshirt after 24 hours and washed it after 48 hours, just to make sure the glue had dried thoroughly. I washed it in the machine on a regular cycle and then threw it in the dryer afterwards. The glue held up just fine and the felt die cut retained its shape perfectly.
